Dear Parents,

Welcome to The Hunt Ridge Montessori School!  The school year is underway and the children are quickly settling in.  September is always chock-full of notes that need to be covered and some will be repeated in the future.

Your Help with Good Health

While we are all highly aware of the virus’ that go through schools, we are especially on alert to maintain wellness in our school.  We are going to ask for your help in so many ways.

–          Please review with your child the importance of hand washing.  We will also speak about this in school.

–          Please review with your child the importance of sneezing into the elbow or upper arm.  We will also review in class.

–          If your child has a runny nose, please look carefully.  If it is clear, it may be allergies.  If it is discolored, it usually means an infection and he/she needs to stay home.  If they come to school with the latter, we will call you right away.  If you suspect that your child may be better off staying home that day, you are usually right!

–          FEVERS: please do not send your child to school with a fever.      Connecticut State Law mandates:

–                 * A child must be FEVER-FREE with NO MEDICATION for a full 24 hours before they return to    school.

–          PINK EYE (CONJUNCTIVITUS)            Connecticut State law mandates:

–                 * A child with Pink Eye must be on medication for Conjunctivitis a full 48 hours before returning     to school.

–          Strep Throat: * Please let us know if your child has Strep Throat. This requires antibiotics for a full 48 hours before returning to school. It is contagious and I would like to notify the other families in the class.

**In an effort to stop the spread of germs, we are asking each family to bring in 2 large containers of pre-moistened wipes (Lysol or a generic brand WITHOUT BLEACH) to his/her classroom.

–          Thank you for helping to keep our children healthy and happy.

Health and Safety

Please be sure that all updated Health Forms and Emergency Information cards are returned to me by September 15th.  Also, please advise me if there are any changes in your work phone, emergency numbers, authorization, etc.  One important item regarding the Health Form:  the DPT shot is occasionally given without the P (Pertussis) part of the shot.  There may be several reasons for this; perhaps your child has had a bad reaction to the shot. * If this is the case, then I must have a note from the doctor stating the reason.  This must accompany the Health Form.  If you have any questions, please ask me or your child’s physician.

*Flu Immunization:  Each child who is enrolled in a school program is required by Connecticut State Law to have the Flu Immunization (mist or injection) prior to January 1, 2016.  Please ask your child’s physician to send along a note of the date that this was administered to your child.   Thank you.

Morning Drop-Off

We have a morning drop off service available to all families and we prefer that you use it.  Beginning at 8:55 a.m., we will be happy to help your child out of the car and into the school building.  It will be most helpful if you place their car seat directly behind the driver’s seat so they can step out onto the sidewalk.  *Please do not park in the drop-off lane.   We do need parent volunteers to help this run more smoothly.  You may sign up in the office with Michelle or Kathleen.  Thank you for your help.

*Please be mindful of the people who are exiting the Church at 9:00am.  Please Drive slowly.

Noon Pick-Up

Each day, the 3 and 4 year old children will be dismissed from the playground at noon.  Please enter the parking lot from the far side of the Church parking lot and form 1 line behind the new Parish Center.  The teachers will bring your child to your car so there is no need for you to get out.    If you wish to park and have a picnic lunch, you are more than welcome to stay.  However, we would like to dismiss the children to the cars in the carpool line first.  Thank You!

Calling All New Families…

If you are sending a 3 or 4 year old to school, will you kindly help us?  Please send a change of clothes, (shirt, pants, underwear, and socks) to school in a shoebox with your child’s name printed on the end.  It is nice to have a change of clothes, just in case.  These boxes may be given to your child’s teacher.

Where is Everyone?

The Class Directory will be available for each and every family the last week of September.  This should help you locate a family with whom you may carpool or just set up an afternoon of play with your child’s classmate.  It also helps to have on hand when your child begins to speak about others in the class.  Please keep it in a safe but obvious place.  Also, check your information to be sure that I have typed it all correctly.  If not, please let me know.

Communication Envelope

Your child will be given a clear plastic envelope with their name on it.  It will be sent home every Wednesday with their work from the week in it. * Please return the folder to school on Thursday.*  We will begin to refill it with their work, announcements or newsletters for the following Wednesday take-home day.  It will help the child recognize their folder if you place a summer photograph of them in their folder.  What fun to look at these pictures all year long!

Scholastic Book orders

Each month, your child will receive a Book Club order from Scholastic Books.  If you find a book or two that you would like to order for your child, please remit with cash or a check made payable to Scholastic Books.  The book orders are sent to Missouri and take about three weeks to process.  I do hope that you will be able to order at least one book for your child sometime through the year.  Scholastic Books provides a nice selection of books and the children are delighted when the UPS man arrives with the package.

Field Trips

This is a very special notice regarding school field trips.  We have scheduled several field trips for the children.  We will need parents to help transport the children to and from the field trip.  If you would like to be a driver on a field trip, may I please have a copy of your driver’s license and car insurance.  Why not copy it now, and then I can keep it in your child’s folder and pull it out as we need it.  Our first field trip will be in October when we take the children to pick pumpkins in Easton.

Birthdays

The class celebrates each child’s birthday with a healthy snack of fruits or vegetables provided by the parent. *No cupcakes or brownies please.*   **If you would like to read your child’s favorite book or donate a book to the classroom library, this would be fantastic!

**Because we have children with food allergies and restricted diets we ask for advance notice as to the type of Birthday snack you will be bringing.  Fruits and Vegetables are safe foods in our school at this time.

Snack

This year we will all learn together the importance of eating healthy.  At the suggestion of many, the snack for each classroom will be handled by the families of that class. During the first few weeks of school, we will send a letter home stating the week that your family will be responsible for providing a healthy snack for the children along with a list of healthy foods that are welcome in the classroom.  We hope that this will be a learning endeavor for all families.

**PLEASE NOTE:     If your child has a special diet or food allergy, kindly send in snack for your child only.    Also, please send in a healthy treat that we can freeze for those special occasions such as birthday celebrations.     Please note that you will be taken out of the class snack rotation if you provide snack for your own child each day.

Recess

With the exception of rain or wind chill factor, we will go outside EVERYDAY and children should come to school appropriately prepared (jackets, hats, mittens, boots).  If you do not feel your child is well enough to be outside, he or she should not attend school that day.

Children’s Programs

Mrs. Maurya Brown is looking forward to beginning Suzuki Piano lessons in mid-September.  There is space available for the 3,4 and 5 year old children who would like to have a small group music lesson for 30 minutes each week….or a 15 minute Private Lesson each week

Mme. Maryse Joilcoeur will begin teaching French class on Wednesday, September 28th.

Mrs. Christine Sargeant & Mrs. Leslie Brander are the directresses for one class of children.

Mrs Kate McTague and Mrs. Jennifer Hios are the directresses for one class of children.

Mrs. Suzy van Hulst & Mrs. Elizabeth Stern are the directresses for one class of children.

Mrs. Rachel Thornton & Mrs. Ellen O’Connor are the directresses for one class of children.

Mrs. Michelle Caserta helps each day in the office and hallway.

I, Mrs. Kathleen Zwahlen, will help anywhere you need.

Art Odds and Ends

We will be asking for your help in the upcoming months as we plan for specific art projects.  We ask for your help in gathering the plastic shopping bags from the grocery store at this time.

Pure Fun

Pure Fun is a collection of optional fun programs for the 4 year old children which will take place from 12:00 noon -2:00pm.  The first session of programs is for 5 weeks.  The following Pure Fun programs are:

Monday:   Tae Kwon Do   with Master KJ

Wednesday:  Yoga for children with Mrs. Rachel Thornton

Friday:  Tennis with Mrs. Elizabeth Stern

If you have any questions, please ask in the school office.

School Hours

We thank you for your attention to the finer details of drop-off and the prompt pick-ups each day.  The morning session begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 12:00 noon.  Casa Piccola meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoon until 2:00pm.  The Extended Day program begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m.  The time before and after are important moments that are needed to prepare for each class.  Thank you for being on time.  If you find that you have left the house early in the morning, please be considerate and allow the staff the time they need to prepare.  The playground is a fun place to spend a few extra minutes with your child.  We will be happy to greet them at 9:00 a.m. knowing that we are well prepared.  At the end of the day, we too have appointments and know that you wouldn’t want us to be late.  Thank you for your courtesy.

*We ask that you have your child shake our hand good-bye when leaving for the day.  Aside from being polite, we are aware that your child is leaving with an Authorized person.

**One important item that I need to mention; please do not allow your child to run into the parking, especially when leaving the playground.  It is an extremely busy place with our families arriving and leaving as well as any people who may be involved with church functions.

One Final Note…

If you happen to do the laundry or are putting your child’s clothes away and … oops, something falls out of the pocket!  Whatever could that be?  Chances are that little piece belongs in the Montessori classroom.  Please do a “pocket check” from time to time and return any little items that you find.  Many thanks!

Welcome to a new and exciting year at The Hunt Ridge Montessori School.  We are glad that you are here!

Kindest Regards!
